NSX-T Concepts
Table of Contents
VMware NSX-T does not support VXLAN!
NSX-T Segments#
a VM is connected to a segment.
- is a layer-2 domain.
- invokes a transport zone.
- once the transport zone configured, you can no longer edit it later.
- VLAN-based segments are equivalent to VLAN IDs
- VLAN-based segments are not permitted to connect to Tier-0 or Tier-1 gateways.
Edge Uplink Segments#
require VLAN transport zones. A single Edge Uplink segment can be used more than once.
Tier-1 Gateways#
are always in active-standby HA mode. Invoke an edge cluster only if you want to use stateful services on this Tier-1 gateway.
Edge Cluster#
required, because it is not permitted to use a single edge transport node. == {edge transport nodes}
Transport Nodes#
a host transport node comes up only if at least one VM or container running on the associated [[Overlay Networks|overlay network]]is up.
Types of Transport Node Profiles#
VDS#
recommended instead of N-VDS. upgrade your ESXi hosts to v7 first, then configure the Tranport Node Profile.
N-VDS#
will be deprecated by VMware.
Cluster virtual IP#
is assigned to one management node at a time. If the node fails, the IP is allocated to the next management node.
Tanzu Basic#
VMware Tanzu Basic allows to embed Tanzu into the control plane of vSphere, or to deploy a Kubernetes management cluster on vSphere 6.7 or vSphere 7. That way, we can manage VMs and containers from vSphere.
